If Gini doesn't seem to be scanning your emails, here's how to troubleshoot.
Check If Email Is Connected
First, verify your email is actually connected:
- Open Gini Help
- Go to Settings > Email Protection
- Look for a green checkmark or "Connected" status
If it shows "Not Connected," you need to connect your email account first.
Common Issues and Solutions
Connection Expired
Sometimes the connection to Gmail or Outlook expires and needs to be refreshed.
Solution:
- Go to Settings > Email Protection
- Tap Disconnect
- Tap Connect again
- Sign in to your email
- Approve the permissions
Permissions Were Revoked
If you removed Gini's access from your Google or Microsoft account, scanning stops.
Solution:
- Reconnect your email in the Gini app
- Make sure to approve all permission requests
No Suspicious Emails
If you don't see any alerts, Gini might simply not have found any phishing emails.
This is good news! It means your inbox is clean. Gini only alerts you when threats are detected.
Sync Delay
Email scanning isn't instant - there's sometimes a short delay.
Normal behavior:
- New emails are usually scanned within a few minutes
- Heavy inbox activity may cause slight delays
- The app doesn't need to be open for scanning to work
App Needs Update
An outdated app might have scanning issues.
Solution:
- Check the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android)
- Update Gini Help if an update is available
- Reconnect your email if needed
Work or School Accounts
Some organizational email accounts have restrictions.
Possible issues:
- Your IT department may block third-party access
- Organizational policies may prevent scanning
- Admin consent may be required
Solution: Check with your IT department about allowing Gini access to your email.
Testing If It's Working
To verify email protection is active:
- Keep the Gini app installed and email connected
- Wait for incoming emails
- Check the Email Protection section periodically for any flagged messages
You can also check by looking at:
- The Dashboard for any email alerts
- Settings > Email Protection for connection status
- Your weekly protection report (if enabled)
If Nothing Works
Try these steps in order:
- Disconnect and reconnect - Go to Settings > Email Protection, disconnect, then connect again
- Restart the app - Close Gini completely and reopen it
- Update the app - Make sure you have the latest version
- Restart your phone - Sometimes this clears connection issues
- Contact support - If still not working, reach out to us
Note: Scanning vs. Alerting
Remember that Gini scans all incoming emails but only alerts you when threats are found. If you're not seeing alerts, it might mean:
- Your inbox is relatively clean
- You haven't received phishing attempts recently
- Scanning is working but nothing flagged
No alerts can actually be a sign that things are working well!
