Setting Up SMS Protection on Android

This guide shows you how to turn on text message protection on your Android phone.

What It Does — and What It Doesn't

On Android, Gini warns you about scam texts. It does not delete them, move them, or hide them.

When a scam text arrives, you get a notification from Gini telling you it looks dangerous — before you have a chance to tap a link in it. The text itself stays right where your phone put it, in your normal Messages app.

This is deliberate. Gini does not take over your text messages or become your messaging app. Your Messages app keeps working exactly as it does today; Gini simply watches and speaks up.

Step-by-Step Setup

Step 1: Open text message protection

  1. Open the Gini Help app
  2. Tap Settings
  3. Tap Text message protection
  4. Tap Protect my texts

Step 2: Turn on warnings

Gini warns you the moment a scam text arrives, so it needs permission to send you notifications first.

Tap Allow notifications. Android will ask — choose Allow.

Step 3: Say yes to reading your texts

Gini will explain what it is about to ask for: permission to read the text messages on this phone — the new ones as they arrive, and the ones already in your inbox.

Tap I understand — continue, then choose Allow on the Android permission box that follows.

Your texts are checked automatically. Gini never sells or shares your messages, and no person reads them.

Step 4: Let Gini check the texts you already have

Gini then scans the messages already sitting in your inbox and tells you what it found:

  • If it finds something suspicious, it shows you the messages so you know what to watch out for
  • If everything looks clean, it tells you that too

That's it. Protection is on.

If You Change Your Mind

You can stop at any step. Tap Maybe later or Not now and nothing happens — text protection simply stays off, and Settings will show it as Off. Gini will not keep asking.

What Happens From Then On

  1. A text arrives on your phone, in your normal Messages app
  2. Gini checks it for the patterns scammers use — fake package notices, fake bank alerts, prize claims, urgent payment demands
  3. If it looks dangerous, Gini sends you a warning notification explaining why
  4. If it looks fine, you hear nothing

You can see everything Gini has flagged in the app: Settings > Text message protection.

Troubleshooting

"I'm not getting warnings"

Check that both permissions are still on:

  1. Go to your phone's Settings > Apps > Gini Help > Permissions
  2. Make sure SMS and Notifications are both set to Allow
  3. Open Gini and go to Settings > Text message protection. If it shows Paused, tap Fix and follow the steps again

Some phone makers — Samsung and Xiaomi especially — put apps to sleep to save battery, which stops notifications. Look for Battery or Sleeping apps in your phone's settings and make sure Gini Help is not on that list.

"A scam text got through without a warning"

Scammers change their wording constantly, and no filter catches everything. If a scam text arrives with no warning, report it in the app so Gini learns from it.

Trust your own judgment too: no real bank, delivery company, or government office will ever text you asking for a password, a code, or a gift card.

"Gini warned me about a text that was fine"

That happens, especially with short automated messages that look like the ones scammers send. Mark it as safe in the app. It costs you a moment; the alternative — a filter tuned so loosely it stays quiet during a real scam — costs a great deal more.

"Setup won't finish"

  1. Make sure Gini Help is up to date in the Play Store
  2. Restart your phone and try again
  3. Check that you have an internet connection

Turning Off Text Protection

  1. Open Gini Help
  2. Go to Settings > Text message protection
  3. Turn off the toggle

Or remove the permission directly: your phone's Settings > Apps > Gini Help > Permissions > SMS > Don't allow.

Multiple Phones

Text protection is set up on each phone separately — it protects the texts on the phone it is installed on. If you carry two phones, install Gini and run this setup on both.
